SIMA: Providing Independent and Accurate Severe Weather Forecasts

At SIMA (South Island Met Agency), we understand the importance of staying informed about significant weather risks for individuals and communities across the Island. While day-to-day weather can be accessed through various apps, we deliver detailed information on upcoming severe weather events.

Our journey began on 20th June 2015, when Severe Weather NZ was launched from the amalgamation of two dedicated Facebook pages. We transitioned to SIMA as the majority of our followers were South Island residents. Driven by a passion for meteorology, we provide reliable forecasts of severe weather events in New Zealand.

With over 24,000 followers as of September 2025, we pride ourselves on meticulously observing multiple weather models to provide precise and dependable forecasts.

We do not issue official warnings or watches—this authority lies with Metservice New Zealand. Instead, we provide independent forecasts with associated probability risks for potential severe weather, helping communities make informed decisions.

Through dedication to accuracy and transparency, SIMA continues to be a trusted source for reliable severe weather forecasts, supporting the resilience of communities across Te Waiponamu.

Started in 2015 from two Facebook pages, later rebranded as SIMA to focus on South Island forecasts.

Over 11 years of experience providing reliable severe weather forecasts to our engaged community.
