Special Weather Statement

Issued: 7.44pm 2/7. Next update by 10am 3/7

Low Pressure returns, with further Significant Rain possible for the Upper South Island

Low pressure has developed in the Tasman Sea and is slowly moving its way eastward, with an associated front expected to arrive into the Western South Island overnight Wednesday, and during Thursday. Although we are not anticipating rainfall accumulations to be overly extreme, as soil conditions are sodden, and the increased risk of localised downpours there is an elevated potential for new slips and surface flooding.

This Special Weather Statement encompasses the Tasman District for heavy rain from early Thursday morning.

Tasman Region: As indicated in our latest Significant Weather Outlook, there is a HIGH risk for impactful rain for the region on Thursday. We are expecting 120-150mm of rain to accumulate (possibly a little more in localised downpours about the ranges.)Peak rainfall intensities of 25mm/hr.

Nelson Region, and Richmond Ranges: Periods of rain, possibly heavy/ We are expecting 80-120mm of rain to accumulate (possibly a little more in localised downpours about the ranges.)Peak rainfall intensities of 10-15mm/hr.

Heavy falls are in other South Island regions, with less confidence for significant impacts. See our Significant Weather Outlook for more information.
